A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday ordered the lifting of a foreign travel ban on former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. In May last year, the Fort Magistrate’s court had banned Mahinda Rajapaksa (77) and some other leaders from traveling abroad. He was under investigation for his involvement in a deadly attack on peaceful anti-government protesters in Colombo. At least nine people lost their lives and over 300 others were injured in the violence in May last year.

On Wednesday, the Fort Magistrate’s Court completely lifted the foreign travel ban on former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, MP Rohit A., Minister Pavitra Vannairachchi and former Provincial Council member Kanchana Jayaratne, reported newsfirst.ik website. According to the ‘Daily Mirror’ newspaper, Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage ordered the registrar to immediately inform the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration about the order. The confiscated passports were ordered to be returned to these four leaders.

Violence broke out last year after supporters of then-prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked anti-government protesters amid an unprecedented economic crisis, and angry mobs set fire to the homes and offices of several lawmakers. The protesters demanded the resignation of Rajapaksa’s younger brother and then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned a few hours later and a curfew was imposed in the country.
