The Election Department has not disclosed the names of the candidates who could not qualify for the post of President. However, media reports said that businessman George Goh, who has been campaigning since last month, was among those who did not meet the eligibility requirements. The department said the six-member PEC, chaired by Public Service Commission Chairman Lee Tzu Yang and including two judges of the Supreme Court, was satisfied that Ng, Tan and Thurman were persons of “integrity, good character and standing”.
Singapore-born Indian-origin Tharman Shanmugaratnam and two former Chinese-origin executives of state-linked companies have qualified to run in Singapore’s presidential election on September 1. The Election Department announced this on Friday. The department said the President’s Election Committee (PEC) received a total of six applications for eligibility certificates by Thursday’s deadline. Singapore has previously said it will hold a presidential election on September 1 if more than one person qualifies for the presidency. The six-year term of outgoing President Halimah Yacob will end on September 13. Among those who have qualified as candidates for the presidential election are Chinese-born chief investment officer Ng Kok Song and former revenue chief executive of the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) Tan Kin Lian.
Thurman, who launched his presidential bid on July 26, met public sector service requirements. He held office as a minister for at least three years. Thurman, 66, resigned from public and political positions last month to run for the presidency. Prior to entering politics in 2001, Thurman was associated with the Monetary Authority of Singapore as an economist and bureaucrat. He served as Minister of Education and Finance and was Deputy Prime Minister from 2011 to 2019. The next step for Ng, Tan and Thurman is to be nominated as candidates. They will have to submit their nomination papers along with eligibility certificate, community certificate and political donation certificate on August 22, the day of nomination.
