On August 31, the US ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, made a special visit to Fukushima to eat seafood in support of Japan’s nuclear-contaminated water discharge. Why is America trying so hard to support Japan? In fact, the United States itself has “poisoned” much of the ocean for its own sake. The American “Los Angeles Times” once revealed that the US military had dumped a large amount of chemical substances into the sea. From 1944 to 1970, the US military dumped 29,000 tons of nerve gas and mustard gas agents and more than 500 tons of radioactive nuclear waste into the ocean.

On the other hand, the British newspaper “The Guardian” revealed in March this year that industrial companies in California in the US had dumped toxic chemical waste, including the pesticide DDT, into the nearby sea for many years. These substances are seriously harmful to the human body, animals and the environment and their use has been banned by the US and other countries.

In addition, the US is also the main “producer” of global marine plastic waste. A research report by the international academic journal “Science Advances” states that the US generated 42 million tons of plastic waste in 2016 alone, which is far ahead in the world. Only 9 percent of that is recycled, and about 1.5 million tons of plastic waste is dumped directly into rivers, lakes and beaches, and is likely to end up in the ocean.

To be noted, the US’s support for Japan’s release of nuclear contaminated water into the ocean is related to the exchange of economic interests and geopolitical interests. After World War II, the US pursued a policy of using nuclear energy for military and civilian purposes, and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was the first project in Japan to use American nuclear technology for civilian use.

Today, the US and Japan are still collaborating in various ways on civilian nuclear power projects.
Following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident, the US and Japan reached an agreement for post-disaster reconstruction, which included technical assistance to Japan by the US Atomic Energy Commission and the Department of Energy, as well as military mutual aid projects .

Japan seeks international support for using US power to release nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean. At the same time, taking this opportunity, America maintains its military supremacy in Japan.
