Haiti Violence: India is considering evacuating its citizens

[ad_1]

The Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it is considering evacuating 90 of its citizens in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the Caribbean country Haiti. Various gangs have launched coordinated attacks on key facilities in the country with the aim of forcing Haiti’s embattled Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in his weekly press briefing that 75 to 90 Indians are present in Haiti, of whom about 60 have registered with Indian authorities to return to India ‘if the need arises’. “We are ready to get everyone out of there,” he said.

India does not have an embassy in Haiti and the situation in the country is being monitored through the Indian Mission in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. The Ministry of External Affairs has already set up control rooms in Santo Domingo as well as New Delhi and issued emergency helpline numbers.

The Indian Embassy in Santo Domingo said it is in touch with all Indians present in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince and other parts of the country. Jaiswal said, ‘We are monitoring the situation. If needed, we are ready to evacuate (Indians).”

Criminal gangs in Haiti attacked various facilities in the country, including police stations, the international airport and some prisons. The Indian community in Haiti includes doctors, engineers and technicians and many missionaries.
