Sao Paulo : At least 26 people have died in two cities in northern Sao Paulo state due to floods and landslides, Brazilian officials said. According to officials, the number of casualties may increase. Sao Sebastiao’s city hall confirmed on Sunday that 25 people had died, and the mayor of Ubatuba informed of the death of a seven-year-old girl.
The cities of São Sebastião, Ubatuba, Ilhabela and Bertioga were among some of the worst affected areas. There is a state of disaster here, in view of which they have canceled their carnival festival. At the same time, rescue teams are searching for the missing, injured and people buried in the debris. “Our rescuers are unable to reach many places, it is a chaotic situation,” said Felipe Augusto, the mayor of São Sebastião.
He told that dozens of people have been killed and more than 50 houses have collapsed due to the landslide. Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva said on Twitter that he would visit the affected area. The Sao Paulo state government said in a statement that the region received more than 600 millimeters of rain in one day, the most in Brazil in such a short period of time.
