Rio de Janeiro: 25 people were killed and 6 others were injured in a collision between a minibus carrying tourists and a truck in Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia. The state fire department gave this information on its official Instagram account. The accident happened on Sunday night at around 10:30 pm local time on a highway near the city of Sao Jose do Jaquip.
According to a newspaper report, the minibus was heading back to the town of Jacobina after a visit to Guarajuba Beach, a tourist destination on the northern coast of Bahia. The newspaper quoted the Federal Highway Police as saying that the collision between the two vehicles may have occurred when the vehicles were trying to overtake each other. However, this has not been confirmed yet.
Highway police did not immediately respond to a request for information from The Associated Press. The municipality of Jacobina announced three days of mourning over the accident and said on its official Instagram account that it was organizing a mass for the victims in the town’s gymnasium.
