Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Education said that the parents of students who are absent from school for 20 days without any excuse or reason can be jailed by the authorities. The Public Prosecution Office will then finalize the investigation and then refer the case to the Criminal Court. If it is proved that the student’s absence from school was due to the negligence of the parent, the judge will have the authority to issue a prison sentence to the parent for a reasonable period of time. As per reports, if such a situation arises, the school principal will have to inform the education ministry which will initiate an inquiry and order the student to be transferred to family care. After this, Family Care will keep the student with them and investigate the matter.

The school will also send the parent to the Public Prosecution Office for investigation. Thereafter, the Criminal Court will consider the matter. The judge will then sentence the guardian to an appropriate term of imprisonment for negligence in the care of the child. As per procedure, if a student takes 3 days off, an early warning will be issued and the same will be transferred to the student guardian. After the student has taken 5 days off, a second warning will be issued and the parent will be informed. After 10 days of absence, a third warning will be issued and the guardian will be called and have to sign the undertaking. After 15 days of absence, the student will be transferred to another school through the Department of Education.
