Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said that former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan may be charged with treason in the cipher case. He said that due to Khan’s involvement in ‘Cypher Gate’, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan could be tried for treason and disqualified. In the Cipher case, Imran Khan is accused of using Pakistan’s secret information for political achievements and personal use. Asif said Article 6 (punishment for being found guilty of high treason) could be invoked on the PTI chief (Khan). He was referring to the law relating to high treason which provides for death penalty or life imprisonment for the guilty.
Why treason?
Imran Khan was ousted from power in 2022 after several opposition parties filed a motion before the National Assembly of Pakistan to move a no-confidence motion against him on March 8, 2022. Subsequently, on April 10, 2022, the no-confidence motion was passed by a majority of 174 votes, resulting in Imran Khan losing the confidence of the House and ceasing to hold the office of Prime Minister of Pakistan. On 27 March 2022, Khan alleged that foreign forces, which he later called Washington, had planned to remove him from office and waved ciphers at a public rally to support his claims. On the other hand, the United States has repeatedly denied any such allegations, calling them “categorically false”, reports Geo News.
