In the same case, Imran Khan was arrested from the Islamabad High Court premises on May 9, following which large-scale violence broke out in the country. More than 10 people were killed in this violence. Thousands of Khan’s supporters are in jail on charges of violence. The Supreme Court released the PTI chief two days later, directing him to seek bail from the Islamabad High Court. In an informal interaction with media persons on the occasion, Khan said that the country is being run by a powerful establishment. “The government and the establishment are one and the same thing, the latter running the former. There is no option but to hold elections,” he said.
Khan has been demanding early general elections in Pakistan ever since he was ousted from the post of prime minister in a no-confidence vote in parliament in April last year. When asked about his loyalists leaving the party, Khan said, “It is an attempt to blackmail.” He also rejected the notion that he has differences with President Arif Alvi. Alvi was a senior member of PTI before being appointed as the President of Pakistan.
Separately, another bench of the Islamabad High Court heard two additional bail applications filed by Imran Khan. The cases pertain to violation of Section 144 and incidents of violence on May 9 during a rally held in Islamabad to show support for the judiciary. The bench extended the PTI chief’s protective bail by 10 days on both the petitions after Khan’s counsel Ali Gauhar and public prosecutor Additional Attorney General Munawwar Iqbal and directed the police to take him to Islamabad jurisdiction after May 9. Do not arrest in any case registered.
During the hearing, Khan’s counsel told the court that there are more than 150 cases registered against the former prime minister and he has to appear for investigation in each case. Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi also appeared before an accountability court in the Al-Qadir Trust case to secure bail. The court declared Bushra Bibi’s bail plea as “infructuous” after NAB investigating officer Mian Umer Nadeem said that her arrest was not required in the case.
