Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Khan, citing differences in the federal alliance, said, “First Shehbaz Sharif will test the trust vote…and later we have another plan for him.” Significantly, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has threatened to leave the alliance over the issue of local body elections in Karachi and Hyderabad. President Alvi belongs to Khan’s PTI party and the federal coalition is running on a slim majority. The MQM-P has seven members in the National Assembly and if it decides to leave the alliance, the Shehbaz government may not survive.
Khan is insisting on holding mid-term elections in the country. Khan said that only fresh elections can get the country out of the economic crisis. However, the federal government says that a general election will be held only after the government’s term ends in August. Meanwhile, the Punjab Assembly in Pakistan was dissolved on Saturday evening as per the constitution, 48 hours after Punjab Governor Baligur Rehman refused to sign the advice of Chief Minister Chaudhary Pervez Elahi.
Elahi had on Thursday sent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s advice to dissolve the assembly as per his “wish”. The Governor did not sign off on this advice. After this, according to the constitution, the assembly was dissolved 48 hours after the advice was sent to the governor. Khan said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly would also be dissolved in a few days.
Meanwhile, prominent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif chaired a party meeting in Lahore on Saturday evening via video link from London. He is in London since November 2019. PML-N spokesperson and federal information minister Maryam Aurangzeb said, “Nawaz Sharif has instructed party leaders and workers to start preparations for elections in Punjab.” He has also asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to set up a parliamentary board to distribute tickets.
