Islamabad: After heavy violence in Pakistan’s Lahore city, police and army personnel have finally retreated from Imran Khan’s house in Zaman Park. This has stopped the ongoing conflict between the Imran government and the Pakistani army. For the last about 20 hours, there was an attack between Pakistani security forces and Imran supporters with stone pelting and petrol bombs. In this, a large number of people from both the sides have been injured. Meanwhile, the Shahbaz government has now given clarification on the sudden retreat of the Pakistan Army. Pakistani minister Maryam Aurangzeb claimed on Wednesday that the ‘police of Gilgit Baltistan province’ was used to stop the Punjab police. Analysts are comparing it with the 1971 Bangladesh war. Actually, Imran Khan’s party PTI has a government in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit Baltistan. On the other hand, there is President’s rule in Punjab and the police there are indirectly working under the Shahbaz government. Maryam Aurangzeb claimed that hundreds of Gilgit police were stationed outside Imran Khan’s house. These policemen attacked the Punjab Police who wanted to take Imran Khan into custody on the orders of the court. Earlier, Imran’s party had alleged that Rangers belonging to the Pakistan Army opened fire on his supporters.

If Maryam’s claim is true, then for the first time since 1971, the police of two provinces of Pakistan have come face to face. Pakistani-origin economic expert Uzair Yunus says, ‘I have been saying repeatedly that this is the most serious threat to the unity of the country after 1971.’ Imran Khan had shared the video of this shootout and alleged that he intended to be kidnapped and killed. The Pakistani minister claimed that Imran Khan wants to spread unrest and chaos in the country. So far 54 policemen have been seriously injured in this violent confrontation.

Meanwhile, PTI on Wednesday alleged that party chief Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence in Lahore was attacked. The party posted footage of armed men firing amid fresh attempts to arrest the former prime minister in the Toshakhana case. Earlier, in an address to the nation via video link, Khan said the “hope is on the courts and the army” to end this “tamasha”. The PTI chief said, “It will (soon) go out of our hands… The kind of activities that are happening… The boys (workers) are not listening to me.” When this chaos and shelling is happening against them, they will not listen to me anymore. I have no control over them now.’

The standoff between PTI supporters and security forces continued for the second consecutive day near Khan’s residence on Wednesday, Dawn reported. TV footage also showed PTI workers setting motorcycles and other vehicles on fire outside Zaman Park. From Tuesday night, party workers engaged the Islamabad police with the help of their Punjab counterparts and later Rangers personnel in a pitched battle that continued till late night and showed no signs of respite. So far, around 30 policemen have been injured during the clashes, while at least 15 PTI people have been detained.
