Overall, less than 100 prisoners of Adiala jail were able to exercise their franchise, which is only one percent of the jail’s 7,000 prisoners.

Sources said that the jail administration allowed only those prisoners to vote who had Computerized National Identity Card or CNIC. The reason for the low voting percentage was that most of the prisoners did not have the original CNIC. A senior officer informed that criminals, dacoits, thieves, those convicted of heinous crimes and undertrials have been kept in the jail. He said that most criminals do not keep CNIC to protect themselves from identification.

The official said that the Adiala jail administration had received the postal ballots from the Election Commission in mid-January. These ballot papers were given to the prisoners. The last date for submitting it was 22 January. During this time, the prisoners in jail exercised their franchise and voted for the party of their choice.
