Lima. At least 36 people were killed in landslides triggered by incessant rains in several villages in southern Peru. Officials gave this information on Monday. Wilson Gutierrez, civil defense official for Mariano Nicolás Valcarcel municipality in Camana province, told local radio RPP that 36 bodies had been recovered in a remote area called Miski. Five of these people were traveling in a van, which fell into the river after the landslide.
Local authorities have appealed for help to clear an area of about three kilometers of a main road blocked off by debris. Civil Defense officials said that 630 houses are expected to be damaged after the landslide. It has also affected bridges, irrigation canals and roads. Peru receives frequent rains during the month of February, often causing deadly landslides.
