India, Greece elevate ties to the level of strategic partnership

In a media statement after his talks with his Greek counterpart, he said that both India and Greece support diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the Ukraine crisis. He said the two sides have ‘excellent coordination’ on geopolitical, international and regional issues, including the Indo-Pacific. He said, “This is the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Greece after a gap of 40 years. Nevertheless, neither the depth of our relations has diminished, nor has there been any decrease in the warmth of our relations. “He said,” Therefore, today the Prime Minister and I decided to take the India-Greece partnership to a ‘strategic’ level. Modi said, “We have decided that we will strengthen our strategic partnership by increasing our cooperation in the areas of defense and security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, new and emerging technology and skill development.” On his part, Mitsotakis welcomed Modi, saying, “Today, the most populous, largest democracy on the planet approaches the first democracy on Earth.”
He said that Greece is very happy to upgrade its relations with India to a strategic partnership. The two sides, he said, are ready to “walk side by side in dealing with various challenges, especially in the face of international turmoil and war in Ukraine – events that make it all the more necessary to adhere to the UN Charter”. Mitsotakis said the two sides are fully united on the goal of maintaining maritime security and the need to abide by the Treaty on the Law of the Sea as it is important given concerns over the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific region. . The Greek prime minister said direct air connectivity between India and Greece was also discussed as he highlighted the “huge opportunities” in tourism. In his remarks, Modi said the two sides also discussed mutual cooperation in the field of counter-terrorism and cyber security. After the talks, an agreement on agricultural cooperation was also signed.
The discussions included digital payments, shipping, pharma, tourism, culture, education and people-to-people ties. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders discussed regional and multilateral issues, including the European Union, the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean, and called for respect for international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Describing the ties between India and Greece as a “natural reunion”, Modi said a migration and mobility partnership agreement would be signed “soon” to facilitate efficient migration between the two countries. In the area of defense and security, he said both sides agreed to promote military-to-military ties as well as defense industries.
