India is going to start a mega hydropower project on the border of China. This project will help in generating large amount of electricity. For so many days the work of this mega project was stuck due to disagreement. But now amid the increasing challenges of the dragon, India is going to start the country’s biggest project on the China border. It is being touted as an important step in the energy transformation of the country. State-run hydropower company NHPC Ltd will begin trial runs in July for the Subansiri Lower project that runs through the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in the country’s northeast. According to Finance Director Rajendra Prasad Goyal, the first unit is expected to be commissioned in December.

What is 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project

This 2880 MW project will be built on the Dibang River in Dibang district of Arunachal Pradesh. This project will help India to produce large amount of electricity in water, which is a vital part of their plan to switch to clean energy sources. In February itself, NHPC Limited informed that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved an investment of Rs 1,600 crore for pre-investment activities for its 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh.

Can help balance the power grid

The Finance Director said that all the eight units would be commissioned by the end of 2024. Hydropower, with its ability to respond quickly to fluctuations in power demand, is increasingly seen as vital to balancing the grid. However, the 2-gigawatt project, which started in 2003, was delayed by protests and litigation, prompted by concerns over environmental damage.

increased project cost

The cost of the project increased to 212.5 billion won ($2.6 billion), more than three times the original estimate. The National Green Tribunal allowed resumption of work in 2019 after a suspension of eight years. Opposition to the dams has limited the country to harnessing barely a third of its 145 gigawatts of hydropower potential. We need to get about 40 approvals from various departments before starting the construction of the hydroelectric project. All investigations should be done at this stage,” said Goyal. “Any blockage is problematic once construction has started.
