According to the report of the American newspaper Washington Post, one of the most dangerous weapons of India is the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, which India has made with Russia. The report said that the BrahMos missile shows how dependent India is on Russian technology and weapons, which prevents it from standing with the West in the Ukraine war.

According to the report, India has not opposed the attack on Ukraine, incurring the displeasure of America. Richard Rossow, an American foreign affairs expert, says that the weapons relationship is the main deterrent to India from resisting the Russian attack. According to Samir Lalwani, an expert at the American Institute of Peace, this arms relationship between India and Russia dates back to the 1960s and now 85 per cent of India’s total arms stockpile is of Russian origin. Russia has given India many deadly and state-of-the-art weapons including fighter jets, nuclear submarines, cruise missiles, battle tanks, Kalashnikov rifles.
According to Lalwani, some of these weapons can remain in the Indian Army till the year 2065. India will continue to depend on Russia for spares and repairs for decades to come. India has also bought 45 percent of its weapons from Russia in the last 5 years. During this period, America supplied only 1 percent of the weapons to the Indian Army, 4 percent to the Navy and the Air Force. Between 2018 and 2022, Russia has sold weapons worth 4 times more to India than the US. According to the report, Russia’s India influence remains considerable in other ways as well. Russia supports India at the United Nations and other global forums.

After the Ukraine war started, Russia has given cheap oil to India, due to which there is a strong relationship between the two. Lalwani says that military dependence is the highest between India and Russia and there is the most permanent relationship between the two. On the other hand, some other experts say that the relationship between India and Russia, which has been going on for the last 6 decades, cannot be ended in one stroke. America will now try to reduce Russian influence during PM Modi’s visit. Rossov says that America is not happy about Russian weapons but these weapons are very important for India amid tensions with China. The same China with which America’s tension is at its peak.
