An Indian national arrested by Scotland Yard in London on an extradition warrant to the US was denied bail by a court here. He was arrested as part of a UK-US co-ordinated operation targeting the financing of terrorism. Sundar Nagarajan, 65, born in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai, appeared in the Westminster Magistrates’ Court via video link on Tuesday. His lawyers said he denied the charges of fraud and money laundering against him.
District Judge Briony Clarke was also told that Nagarajan was from a Hindu background and did not support Islamic terrorism. The judge refused him bail and sent him to custody and asked him to appear in court via video link on May 23. Nagarajan was arrested by the Metropolitan Police’s National Extradition Unit on April 18 from a west London home. The court was told that armed police officers entered his house to arrest him and confiscated his belongings.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) told the court on behalf of the US authorities that Nagarajan handled the financial transactions of the banned Hezbollah terrorist organization and was wanted by the US authorities for fraud and money laundering. Following his arrest, the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command has arrested a 50-year-old man from Wales on suspicion of terror financing. The Metropolitan Police said the ‘investigations and arrests being carried out by the National Terrorist Financing Investigation Unit (NTFIU) are related to alleged terrorism financing and money laundering.
It is believed to belong to wealthy art collector and diamond merchant Nazim Ahmed, he said. Ahmed is suspected of raising funds for the banned Hezbollah in Britain and the US. Last week, the British government announced a ban against Ahmed. Apart from this, America has also imposed sanctions on many people including Ahmed and Nagarjan. According to US officials, Nagarajan is among Ahmed’s aides.
