Thangaraju Supaiah (46) was hanged in Changi Jail in the early hours after a court here rejected his last-minute appeal. Supayya was convicted by a High Court judge in October 2018 of abetment of an accomplice to a drug-trafficking conspiracy.

An Indian-origin drug peddler was hanged in Singapore on Wednesday. The court had on Tuesday rejected an application filed by the convicted smuggler’s family, human rights activists and the United Nations to pardon him. Thangaraju Supaiah (46) was hanged in Changi Jail in the early hours after a court here rejected his last-minute appeal. Supayya was convicted by a High Court judge in October 2018 of abetment of an accomplice to a drug-trafficking conspiracy.

The conspiracy was related to the supply of one kilogram of cannabis, which is an offense under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Supayya was detained in 2014 on charges of consuming drugs and failing to appear for investigation. A statement from the Singapore Prison Service said Supayya was “executed today at Changi Prison Complex”. Leelavathi Supayya, sister of Thangaraju Supayya, said the family has received the death certificate. This is the first execution carried out in Singapore in six months. Supayya’s case was supported by British billionaire Richard Branson and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Raveena Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Tuesday urged the Singapore government to “immediately reconsider this step (Supayya’s execution) and take steps to fully respect the most fundamental of human rights – the right to life”. ” Branson claimed in a blog post that Thangaraju’s sentence did not meet the standards and that “Singapore may be going to kill an innocent man”. Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Tuesday that Branson’s views on a Singaporean sentenced to death showed “disrespect” to the country’s judges and criminal justice system.

Channel News Asia quoted a statement issued by the Singapore Prison Service as saying that Supayya was hanged at the Changi Prison complex on Wednesday morning. A Singapore court on Tuesday rejected Supayya’s plea to reconsider his case and stay the execution of the sentence till then, the channel reported. In his 15-page order, Justice Chong had said that Supayya had failed to present a valid ground for the court to review his case.
