The Indian Navy foiled a piracy attempt on an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel with a crew of 11 Iranian and eight Pakistani nationals off the east coast of Somalia as part of rescue operations in the area.
Indian warship INS Sharda left for rescue after seven pirates took crew members hostage on FV Omaril, officials said on Friday.
He said the warship deployed for anti-piracy mission in the area was dispatched to intercept the ship when Indian Navy aircraft conducting surveillance in the area successfully detected FV Omaril.
The Navy received information about the piracy incident late on the night of 31 January. “The Iranian-flagged ship FV Omaril was boarded by seven pirates who took the crew hostage,” Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said.
He said INS Sharda intercepted the ship early on Friday and used its boats to force the pirates to release the crew along with the ship. He said the ship had ensured the successful release of 11 Iranian and eight Pakistani crew members.
