New York: Indian-origin Sikh Manmeet Kolan has been sworn in as the first assistant police chief of the city of New Haven, Connecticut. She has become the first Indian-American and second black female assistant chief of the department to reach the top position. According to the report, the board of police commissioners in New Haven unanimously approved the appointment of the 37-year-old colonel, who was previously a lieutenant in the Office of Internal Affairs.
Born in Mumbai, Colon moved with her family to Queens at the age of 11 and studied criminal justice at the University of New Haven. Colon expressed hope that her position as the first Indian-American assistant chief of department would inspire others from similar backgrounds to pursue careers in law enforcement.
Kolan said that I come from a Sikh family. I speak Punjabi. I am very proud of my heritage. More important are the mission and values of the department. For me, it’s all about being fair. My background, my ethics, my family values and traditions I think I bring a lot to the table. I’m glad there’s a place for me at the table. Colon’s daughter puts the new assistant chief badge on her mother’s uniform. A trailblazer, AC Callan is the first Indian-origin woman in NHPD history to serve in this position, Mayor Elikar tweeted. I am confident that she will continue to serve our city with honor and pride.
In his tenure with the New Haven Police Department (NHPD), Colon has worked in patrol, as a detective in the Special Victims Unit, as a sergeant overseeing the Robbery and Theft Unit, as a lieutenant for Newhallville and Dixwell. and as District Manager, and most recently as Chief of the Internal Affairs Division. Police Chief Carl Jacobson, who recommended Colon, expressed hope that the appointment of the Indian-American would inspire more women to join the New Haven Police Department. “It’s a great day for the city of New Haven, and also for the Indian community and black women in the state,” said Avelice Ribeiro, president of the police commission.
