Indian student claims he was targeted at London’s top university because of his Hindu identity

Karan Kataria, a student from Haryana, is pursuing his post-graduation in law at the University of London. Kataria said that he was motivated to contest the LSE student union elections with the support of other students. However, he was disqualified last week.
A student from India has claimed that he was disqualified from the London School of Economics (LSE) student union elections as a result of a deliberate campaign to damage his reputation on the grounds of his Indian and Hindu identity. Karan Kataria, a student from Haryana, is pursuing his post-graduation in law at the University of London. Kataria said that he was motivated to contest the LSE student union elections with the support of other students. However, he was disqualified last week.
He is of the view that the allegations leveled against him are baseless and he has not been given an opportunity to present his case fully. She said, “Unfortunately some people did not want to see an Indian-Hindu leading the LSE student union and tried to tarnish my character and identity….” Kataria (22) said, When I started my post graduation at LSE, I was hopeful that I would fulfill my passion for student welfare. But my dreams were shattered when a deliberately designed campaign was launched to malign my reputation because of my Indian and Hindu identity.
Kataria is from a middle-class farming background and describes himself as the first generation of university graduates in his family. Soon after arriving in London last year to pursue postgraduate studies at LSE Law School, she was elected academic representative of her peer group. Also, she was elected as the representative for Britain’s National Union for Students.
He said, “Despite receiving overwhelming support from students of all nationalities, I have been disqualified for the election as the General Secretary of the LSE Students Union. I have been accused of being homophobic, Islamophobic, and a Hindu nationalist.” The Indian student said, “…identifying those who start hate campaigns Instead of doing or punishing, the LSE Students’ Union disqualified me without hearing my side or disclosing the votes I got.
Kataria said, “Even on the last day of voting, Indian students were intimidated and targeted because of their nationality and Hindu religious identity. The students raised the issue, but the LSE Students’ Union did not take action against the bully.” He has a strong stand of zero tolerance towards harassment. “Unfortunately, this year election rules were violated by one of the candidates, as a result of which the LSE Students Union has taken the difficult decision of disqualifying him from the leadership race for the position of General Secretary this year,” the statement said.
