Eight people, including two firefighters, were injured in a major fire at Bangabazar, a major clothing market in Bangladesh’s capital, in the early hours of Tuesday. Shahjahan Shikdar, in-charge of the media wing of the Fire Services and Civil Defence, said that the fire broke out in Bangabazar at around 6.10 am and was brought under control at 12.36 pm after six hours of struggle. Due to strong winds, the fire was seen spreading to nearby buildings. Flames can still be seen at various places.
Bangladesh Air Force helicopters sprayed water on the market to extinguish the fire, bdnews24.com portal reported. At least eight people, including two members of the fire brigade and civil defence, were injured while extinguishing the massive blaze, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. Rafi-al-Farooq, deputy officer of the fire service and civil defence, said 48 units of the fire service were fighting the blaze. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Anwar-ul-Islam Dolon, media department officer in the fire service, said a unit of fire brigade personnel had reached the spot within two minutes of receiving the information. Eyewitnesses said that the owners and employees of the shops reached the spot after hearing the news of the fire. They were seen taking out goods from their shops and taking them to a safe place. Traders present on the spot said that at least six markets of Bangabazar caught fire.
There are around 2,900 shops in Bangabazar and around 150,000 people work there. Bangabazar is one of the largest markets in the country. It has hundreds of godowns made of tin and wood. In view of the upcoming Eid festival this month, the clothing stores were filled with new stock. During Ramzan, many workers of clothing shops spend the night in their shops.
Reports said that the traders and their employees were trying their best to save the goods from the fire. Earlier in 1995 there was a fire in Bangabazar and it was reduced to ashes. It was rebuilt. The market is owned by Dhaka South City Corporation and is divided into four parts, Bangabazar Complex, Gulistan Unit, Mohannagar Unit and Adarsha Unit.
