He said that under this, the Biden administration has said that these three countries will sign a new security agreement under which the three countries will consult each other in the event of a security crisis or threat in the Indian Pacific region. He said that this summit of heads of state of the three countries has become the center of discussion all over the world and China has even criticized it. He said that these three countries have come together also because the security threats are similar somewhere. He said the three countries are looking to strengthen security and economic ties amid continuing nuclear threats from North Korea and growing concerns about Chinese provocations in the Pacific. He noted that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has also said that “strengthening trilateral strategic cooperation would be a historic opportunity”.

He noted that the US has long been engaged with Japan and South Korea, but Japan’s brutal 35-year occupation of the Korean Peninsula had led to a historic animosity between Tokyo and Seoul. He said that Biden has been successful in convincing Japan and South Korea that the real threat is not from each other but from China.

Brigadier Shri DS Tripathi (retd) said that it is believed that the security agreement being signed between the three countries will not go as far as Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which mandates the allies to “take action” in the event of an attack on any member. compels to. However, this security pact would give hope that the three would work together in difficult times, he said. He said that under this agreement, the three countries will increase cooperation in the defense sector, expand the annual three-way military exercise and create a framework for security assistance in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
