Jakarta: A fishing boat capsized after being hit by sea waves near Sulawesi island of Indonesia. There were 37 people on board the boat. Officials said that at least two people died in the accident while 24 others are missing. Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency said in a statement that the boat, named ‘Dewi Jaya 2’, was heading from a port in Jakarta to Lombok island near Bali carrying several tonnes of fish.

But after midnight on Saturday, the weather became stormy due to which high waves started rising in the sea and due to its impact, the boat filled with 37 passengers capsized. The boat capsized in the Gulf of Bone, about 52 nautical miles from Benteng port in Selayar island in South Sulawesi province, the statement said. On Sunday, local fishermen informed the team of rescue workers about this incident. As soon as the information was received, rescue workers reached the spot, where they safely rescued 11 people including the captain.

All of them were stranded at different places in Selayar. Rescuers have also recovered bodies of two people from the spot. The agency said that 11 people who were safely evacuated from there have been admitted to nearby health centers and their condition is stable. Meanwhile, rescue workers are searching for 24 missing people. There have been several maritime accidents in Indonesia in recent years, in which hundreds of people have lost their lives. Such accidents often occur due to overcrowding in boats and not following safety rules properly.
