Integrated strategy and more funding needed to address Myanmar crisis: Guterres

The United Nations chief on Thursday called on the international community to formulate a unified strategy to address the deepening Myanmar crisis. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that there is a need to increase the declining financial assistance to its previous level so that the world organization can deal with this deepening crisis. He said the situation in Myanmar has worsened since his meeting with ASEAN leaders in 2022. He has appealed to the military government of the crisis-hit country to immediately release political prisoners and pave the way for the return of democratic rule.

Myanmar’s army seized power from the elected government of ‘Aung San Suu Kyi’ on February 1, 2021 and arrested Suu Kyi, including top members of her National League for Democracy party government.The party formed the new government by registering an unprecedented victory in the 2020 general elections. Guterres raised the issue of international cooperation on Myanmar on Thursday before attending an ASEAN meeting in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. Guterres expressed concern over various issues arising from countries’ entanglement among themselves.

He said, “Our world is on the brink of collapse due to a host of crises… from the worsening climate emergency and increasing wars and conflicts to rising poverty, rising inequalities and rising geopolitical tensions, etc.” “I am concerned about the rapidly deteriorating political, humanitarian and human rights situation in Myanmar, including the situation in Rakhine State and the suffering of refugees living in poor conditions,” Guterres said. The UN Secretary-General also supported the five-point peace plan made by ASEAN leaders in 2021.
