New Delhi, 30 October (Hindustan Reporter). Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called for inter-governmental cooperation to nab the people (masterminds) running the smuggling networks. He said that inter-governmental cooperation is also necessary to crack down on illegal trade.
The Finance Minister was addressing the Global Conference on Cooperation in Enforcement Matters 2023 organized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in New Delhi on Monday. Addressing a global conference organized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Sitharaman said customs officials should share information among themselves to curb illicit trade networks. He said efforts should be made to ensure that the information shared by them is ‘actionable’.
Sitharaman said that there has been no change in the nature of smuggling or illegal trade of goods in the last 50-60 years. Even now, only precious metals, narcotics, valuable reserves from forests or seas are smuggled. The Finance Minister said that the efforts to curb illegal trade in goods are confirmed by the fact that customs officials are alert. Sitharaman said that you have stopped some smuggled goods, whatever goods you have caught, even if it is not legal, you completely destroy it. It shows your dedication.
