Iran said on Wednesday it had expelled two of its diplomats over alleged interference by Germany in its internal affairs. Earlier, Germany suspended two diplomats after a critic of Iran’s government was executed over the deadly attacks. Iran’s foreign ministry said it had summoned the German ambassador over the “excessive” demands. However, this was not explained in detail. Iran has accused Western countries of inciting nationwide anti-government protests. Protests erupted in September following the death of a young woman in the custody of Iran’s moral police. Germany expelled two of its diplomats in protest against the execution of Jamshid Sharmad, a critic of the Iranian government. Iran accuses Sharmad of leading the armed wing of a group committed to restoring the Western-backed monarchy that ruled Iran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Sharmad’s family maintains that he was only a spokesman for the opposition group and denied any involvement in the attack. German Foreign Minister Annalena Bierbock summoned the charge of the Iranian embassy last week, saying that the German citizen’s rights had been violated. Barebock said Sharmad, who lives in Glendora, California, was not even given a fair trial. Sharmad’s family members said that he was abducted in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 2020 and taken to Iran.
