Speaking at an event for Indian diaspora in Cape Town on Saturday after attending the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, Jaishankar said he can speak for himself and does not do politics while traveling abroad. “Look, I have said that I can only speak for myself, I try not to do politics when I go abroad,” he said in response to a question.
He said, “I am fully prepared to debate and debate vigorously at home—-but I think you know, even a democratic system has a certain collective responsibility. There is national interest, there is collective image. Sometimes there are bigger things than politics and when you step outside the country, I think it is important to remember that.
Jaishankar said, “So I can have disagreements with anyone. I can tell you, I disagree with them. But, how can I answer it, I would like to go home and do it. And when I come back, keep an eye on me.” Jaishankar said a part of Indian foreign policy today is focused on securing the welfare of Indian citizens abroad. He said that given the globalization of Indians today, it is important to put in place mechanisms that can respond to difficult situations.
He said, “Sometimes they can be country-specific. A few weeks ago we had a very bad situation in Sudan. Also when fighting started in Ukraine. In fact, when I look back at these last nine years, almost every year, we’ve had a challenge somewhere.” Today it is our fundamental responsibility to take care of Indians living and traveling abroad.
