New Delhi : Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida arrived here on Monday morning for talks on boosting bilateral ties in a number of areas, including defense and security, trade and investment and high technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kishida will also discuss priorities for India’s G-20 presidency and Japan’s G-7 presidency during the day.
In view of India’s increasingly important role, the Prime Minister of Japan can also talk about his plan for a “free and open Indo-Pacific” in the region during this period. The evolving situation in the Indo-Pacific region in the backdrop of China’s growing military assertiveness is also likely to figure in the wide-ranging talks between Modi and Kishida.
The visit of the Prime Minister of Japan is expected to be around 27 hours. He is expected to present his views on a “free and open Indo-Pacific plan for peace” during a lecture at a major think-tank in the afternoon. The plan is likely to underline India’s importance regarding the Indo-Pacific. In June last year, during the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Kishida had said that he would lay out a plan for the Indo-Pacific in the coming days.
He had said, “I will, in the coming days, lay out a plan for a free and open Indo-Pacific aimed at peace, providing patrol vessels and enhancing maritime law, enforcement capacity, cyber security, digital and green initiatives and Will strengthen Japan’s efforts to promote a vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific with an emphasis on economic security. The plan is expected to provide detailed information about Japan’s policy and approach towards the Indo-Pacific. In the last few years, almost all major powers have come out with their strategies on the Indo-Pacific.
