Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya in Canada has strongly criticized the pro-Khalistani posters. Condemning the inflammatory message, he warned that snakes are raising their heads and hissing in our backyards. Arya, a Liberal Party politician from Karnataka, condemned the posters representing Indian diplomats and said there was a growing threat from Khalistan supporters in Canada.
He said in a tweet that the Khalists in Canada are reaching new lows in abusing our charter of rights and freedoms by promoting violence and hatred. Sharing one such poster, he wrote that we should pay attention that snakes in our backyard are raising their heads and hissing. It’s only a matter of time when they bite to kill. The poster has supported the ‘Khalistan Freedom Rally’ to be held on 8 July. The poster names Sanjay Kumar Verma, the High Commissioner of India in Ottawa and Apoorva Srivastava, the Consul General in Toronto, as the “killer” of Khalistan Tiger Force chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
This sparked outrage across India, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar warning that relations between India and Canada could be affected if Khalistani elements were given space. He said that the Government of India has approached partner countries like Canada and United Kingdom and requested them not to give space to Khalistani groups. He warned that this would affect relations between the countries.
