Kumar Barve sworn in as Maryland Public Service Commissioner

New York (Best Hindu News): Kumar P. Barve, the first Indian-American elected to the state legislature in the US, has been officially sworn in as a member of the Maryland Public Service Commission. Barve, a Rockville resident, is expected to take up the position next week. He was named by Governor Wes Moore as the successor to Commissioner Patrice M. Buber. Buber has served in this position since May 18, 2022.
In selecting her for the position last month, Governor Moore said that Barve is a veteran of the Maryland House of Delegates and her leadership within the Environment and Transportation Committee makes her an ideal candidate for the role.
Moore said he is confident in Barve’s ability to strengthen his administration’s commitment to environmental stewardship while ensuring the safety of tax payers.
Prior to his appointment, Barvey had held leadership roles in the Maryland House of Delegates since 1991, including Chairman of the Environment and Transportation Committee, Majority Leader, Majority Whip, and Chairman of the Montgomery County House Delegation.
While in the General Assembly, he worked on a range of issues including environmental regulation, energy production and conservation, and greenhouse gas reduction.
Barve, a graduate of Paint Branch High School in Silver Spring, earned a B.S. Earned a BS in Accounting from Georgetown University.
In 2017, he was awarded the League of Conservation Voters Legislator of the Year. He also received the India Abroad Lifetime Service Award in 2013, followed by the Tech Council of Maryland Technology Advocate of the Year award in 2008 and 2006.
