Legaspi. Lava began pouring out of Mayon, the Philippines’ most active volcano, on Monday, slowly sliding down the slope. Thousands of people have been asked to move to safer places in view of the possibility of eruption of the volcano at any time. Over 12,600 people living within a six kilometer radius of ‘Mayon’ have taken shelter in safer places after the volcano’s flare-up and lava spewing intensified last week. Most of them are farmers. Even now thousands of people are living in the surrounding areas of ‘Mayon’ and are in danger.
People have settled and farmed here for generations despite people being asked to stay away from the place as they have nowhere else to go. Teresito Bacolcol, director of the ‘Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’, told that lava started coming out of the volcano on Sunday night. The scope of the high-risk zone around ‘Mayon’ may be increased. If this happens, people living in the extended radius should be prepared to move to safer places, he said. Bakolkol told that the level of alertness is currently three but if the lava starts coming out fast, then the level of alertness can be increased.
