beirut (Uttam Hindu News): Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has urged a halt to Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon during discussions with US Ambassador Amos Hochstein.
“We want peace and stability through adherence to international resolutions,” Mikati, who visited Lebanon on Thursday to address rising tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, told Hochstein, according to a statement from the Lebanese Council of Ministers.
For his part, Hochstein highlighted the need to calm the situation in southern Lebanon and proposed the exploration of a temporary agreement to prevent further escalation, the statement said.
Hochstein also met with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and other officials on the current situation on the Lebanon-Israel borders as well as the conflict in Gaza, Xinhua news agency reported.
Border clashes also intensified on Thursday, with an Israeli air strike on Lebanon’s southern city of Hanin killing two members of the civil defense and wounding four others, a Lebanese military source told Xinhua.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the deaths were caused by four missiles fired by an Israeli warplane at a civil defense center in Hanin and two nearby houses.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah said its fighters attacked several Israeli positions in al-Baghdadi and al-Motela.
