The 50-year-old senior PML-N vice-president won the election for the chief minister’s post amid a walkout by MPs from Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) backed by former prime minister Imran Khan’s party.
Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party leader and daughter of three-time former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Maryam Nawaz on Monday became the first woman Chief Minister of Punjab province. The 50-year-old senior PML-N vice-president won the election for the chief minister’s post amid a walkout by MPs from Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) backed by former prime minister Imran Khan’s party. Maryam Nawaz defeated PTI-backed SIC’s Rana Aftab to win the chief ministerial election for the politically crucial Punjab province, home to 120 million people.
He also visited his mother’s grave in Jati Umrah before heading to the Punjab Assembly, where the election for the post of Chief Minister was held. In a post on Twitter, the PML-N said Maryam also visited the graves of her maternal grandparents. For the first time in the history of our country, a woman will become the CM of Punjab. Maryam Nawaz Sharif will be the first woman to take oath as the CM of Punjab! PML-N said in a post on Twitter ahead of the elections.
