Maryam Nawaz Sharif is the sixth member of the family to start the election journey from Lahore – Dainik Savera Times

Lahore: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Sharif is the sixth member of the Sharif family to start her political journey from Lahore. Maryam Nawaz has been fielded from NA-119 and a provincial assembly seat in Lahore and is the second woman from her family to contest elections for the lower house of parliament.

All five previous members of the Sharif family, including the late Mian Sharif’s three sons, Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and Abbas Sharif, were elected MNAs in their first elections on Lahore soil. PMLN president Shehbaz Sharif’s son Hamza Shehbaz and Nawaz Sharif’s wife and Maryam Nawaz’s mother Begum Kalsoom Nawaz also won their first elections from Lahore. Hamza Shehbaz is the only scion of the Sharif family who was elected unopposed from the then NA-119 in the 2008 by-elections as the PPP withdrew its candidate against him. The by-election was held due to the death of Tariq Bande, the candidate contesting on this seat.

Among close and distant relatives of the Sharif family, personalities like Ishaq Dar, Suhail Zia Butt, Omar Suhail Zia Butt, Bilal Yasin and Mohsin Latif were selected from Lahore. The first member of the Sharif family to make an electoral debut from Lahore was Nawaz Sharif, who was elected MNA and MPA in his very first election in 1985.
