Another rant by Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the paramilitary Wagner Group, has exposed a power struggle at the top of Russia’s military leadership as Russia continues its devastating war in Ukraine. Describing Russian commanders as “fools”, Prigozhin last week blamed them for “criminal orders” and questioned whether the army could defend Russian territory. Troubled by slow supplies of ammunition, Prigozhin also made a video with the bodies of Wagner fighters attacking Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
Showing the dead body, he said in anger, “Look at him. Look at them You sit in expensive clubs. Your kids make YouTube videos… They (Wagner fighters) lose their lives so that you can sit in your office and have a full meal.” Prigozhin also took a dig at Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him “happy grandfather”. Told those who feel that the war in Ukraine is going on smoothly. Prigozhin is considered close to the Russian President. The dispute between the Wagner Group and Russia’s military has become a soap opera playing out in front of a global audience. An article published in the Washington Post this week said that Prigozhin had contacted Ukraine’s military intelligence on several occasions.

Prigozhin later founded the Internet Research Agency, which was designed to promote disinformation about Russia and interfere in elections. Prigozhin formed the private military company Wagner in 2014 with Dmitry Utkin, a former commander of Russia’s military intelligence special forces. Its fighters are trained at Russian Defense Ministry bases. Among its outstanding personnel are former servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces. It is now active in Syria, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Libya, Mozambique, Mali, Cameroon and Madagascar, among other countries.
Prigozhin has proven himself to be a man eager to glorify violence, reflecting Putin’s brutal martial culture in Russia. Russia’s ongoing military drama is dangerous for the Kremlin.
