Britain on Friday banned the import of Russian diamonds and metals of Russian origin such as copper, aluminum and nickel, further increasing sanctions against Russia. In the year 2021, the business of Russian diamonds and these metals was worth four billion US dollars. Apart from this, Britain has also announced sanctions on about 86 people and companies related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is in Japan to attend the G7 summit, said the move and individual sanctions would hit Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sources of revenue.
During talks with G7 leaders in Hiroshima, Sunak warned against complacency in defending democratic values and standing up against authoritarian regimes. Sunak said, “For global peace and security, we must show that brutal violence and coercive force do not pay off. As today’s announcement of sanctions demonstrates, the G7 stands united in confronting the threat from Russia, and our support for Ukraine continues steadfastly.
