Referring to the cricketing ties between India and Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said millions of Indians mourned the death of legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne last year. Modi said this while addressing a community event at the Kudos Bank Arena in Sydney along with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese. Citing examples of yoga, cricket, films and cooking television show ‘MasterChef’, he underlined the strong ties between India and Australia.
He said, “Our cricketing relationship has also completed 75 years. As interesting as the competition on the cricket field is, our friendship off the field is equally deep. This time, many women cricketers from Australia also came to India for the first time to play in the Indian Premier League. “It is not that both the countries are just companions of happiness. A good friend is not only a companion of happiness, but also a companion of sorrow. When the great Shane Warne passed away last year, millions of Indians mourned along with Australia. It was as if we had lost someone of our own.
Warne (52), one of the greatest spinners of cricket, died in Thailand in March last year. He was found unconscious at his residence and could not be saved. Veteran wicketkeeper Rodney Marsh also died on the same day. It was a double whammy for Australia. Warne had condoled the demise of his senior senior player by tweeting. Modi said that there is a geographical distance between the two countries, but the Indian Ocean connects them, lifestyles may be different, but now yoga also connects them.
He said that both the countries have been associated with cricket since long, but now tennis and films are also connecting them. Modi had reached Australia here from Papua New Guinea. His visit (May 22-24) comes after meetings with Albanese, US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Hiroshima. Modi will hold bilateral talks with Albanese on Wednesday.
