Modi, Albanese lay foundation stone of ‘Little India’ at special community event

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of a ‘Little India’ gateway to be built to symbolize the friendship between the two countries and to recognize the contribution of the Indian diaspora, at Harris Park here. Harris Park is a center in western Sydney where the Indian community celebrates festivals and events such as Diwali and Australia Day. The Ministry of External Affairs tweeted, “Recognizing the role of the Indian diaspora as a bridge between India and Australia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined Prime Minister Albanese at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the ‘Little India’ gateway to be built at Harris Park in Parramatta, Sydney. A large number of Indian community is settled here.

“The Gateway will serve as a symbol of India-Australia friendship and the immense contribution of the Indian diaspora to it,” the tweet said. The City of Parramatta said on its website, “Harris Park is a thriving, dynamic, multicultural hub known for its fusion of cultures and large Indian population.” Known as ‘Little India’, Harris Park has more than 20 eateries on Wigram, Marion and Station Street, shops selling colorful sarees, dazzling bangles and Indian spices, which will make you feel like you’re in India, she said. He also asked the community members present in the arena to take Prime Minister Albanese to Harris Park to taste Indian chaat and sweets. He said, “I have heard that the ‘Chaat’ of Chatkaj in Harris Park and the ‘Jalebi’ of Jaipur Sweets are very tasty. I want you all to take my friend Australian Prime Minister Albanese to that place. The first proposal to officially name the area ‘Little India’ was drawn up in 2015.
