Jaishankar said one of the biggest challenges before India and China is to reach and maintain a balance, as he emphasized China’s decision to withdraw from the border agreements made in the late 1980s, which led to the conflict in eastern Ladakh. Responding to a question on the agreement between India and China, he said that since the late 1980s, we had an understanding on the border because it suited both of us. Now we have bid farewell after almost 30 years. This is a departure from how he behaved at the border. We are both moving forward, obviously at different speeds with different starting points. The Chinese, I think, started earlier and much more intensively than we did. But it is in the nature of things that everyone loses at some stage or the other. Therefore, he also said during the meeting that a time will come when they will end and we will be growing.

The External Affairs Minister stressed that reaching and maintaining the balance will not be easy for the two Asian neighbors as one or the other will try to make changes and the other will resist it. He said that mind games will be played between both the parties. He said that the other 190 odd countries do not exist in our relationship. This will be a mind game that will be played. I don’t think we should play it. Jaishankar said China started earlier and with greater intensity and strength than India. But it’s in the nature of things that everyone runs out at some stage or the other. Therefore, there will come a period when they will end and we will be growing.
