Israel-based chip manufacturing company Tower Semiconductor has submitted a proposal to set up an approximately $8 billion chip fabrication plant in India, The Indian Express reports. The government is assessing its status and is hopeful that it will be approved before the Model Code of Conduct comes into force before this year’s general elections. If the tower proposal is accepted by the government, it would be the first semiconductor company with genuine manufacturing pedigree to join India’s $10 billion chip manufacturing plan, and would be a major boost to New Delhi’s chip manufacturing ambitions. The scheme promises 50 per cent capital expenditure subsidy to successful applicants which means if the tower’s plant costs $8 billion, the Center will pay $4 billion from its kitty. Any state where a chip foundry may be located may provide additional benefits to the company.

Till now China was considered the king of semiconductor chips. But India has started capturing this market. Semiconductor chips are used in smartphones, TVs, washing machines, satellite systems, wireless communication systems, solar energy plants, electronic cars and artificial intelligence technology.
