In a session at the G-7 summit in Hiroshima, Modi called for an end to the “expansionist mindset” that cornered fertilizer resources and advocated democratization of technology.
Prime Minister Modi’s 10-point action plan to reduce food/food wastage, de-politicize the global fertilizer supply chain, promote millets/sri-annas, promote holistic healthcare, strengthen digital healthcare, and promote sustainable development in developing countries development model keeping in view the needs of the Modi said that there is a need to focus on the holistic use of natural resources and change the development model driven by consumerism. The Prime Minister said efforts should be made to create an inclusive food system that focuses on the world’s most vulnerable, especially “marginal farmers should be our priority”.
He said, “The global fertilizer supply chain has to be strengthened. Political barriers have to be removed in this. The expansionist mindset that is capturing the fertilizer resources has to be stopped. This should be the aim of our cooperation. However, the Prime Minister did not name any country. Emphasizing on stopping the wastage of food, Modi said that it should be our collective responsibility. “It is essential for sustainable global food security,” he said. The G-7 includes the US, France, Britain, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan as well as the European Union. Under the chairmanship of the G-7, Japan has invited India and seven other countries to the summit.
Modi also underlined the need to focus on development, technology and democracy together. He said, “Democratisation of technology is essential. Technology can become a bridge between development and democracy.” The Prime Minister also said that the development model should pave the way for welfare and should not hinder the progress of developing countries. He said, “I am confident that our discussions today will be useful in creating an important link between the agenda of the G-20 and the G-7 … will succeed in prioritizing the hopes and expectations of the ‘Global South’.” ‘
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of natural farming. He said, “We can create a new model of natural farming as an alternative to fertilizers across the world. I believe that we should take the benefits of digital technology to every farmer in the world.” Modi said organic food needs to be looked at as something more than “hypocrisy and commerce” and should instead be linked to nutrition and health. He also told about the benefits of millets. Millets address the challenges of nutrition, climate change, water conservation and food security simultaneously, the Prime Minister said. Awareness should be created on this.
