The exhibition of the holy relics of Lord Buddha and his two disciples Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Maha Moggallana ended as the holy relics returned to India on 19 March 2024 by a special IAF flight that departed from Krabi. A delegation led by Shri Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Councilor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) returned to India with the remains.

Over a period of last 25 days, more than four million devotees from various parts of Thailand and its neighboring countries in the Mekong region paid homage to the sacred relics. The overwhelming response of devotees exceeded all expectations, making the exhibition of the relics in Thailand, also known as the Ganges Mekong Sacred Relic Dhammayatra, a resounding success, and a centuries-old exchange between India and the countries of the Mekong region. Civilizational ties confirmed.

The final stage of the exhibition was held in Krabi, southern Thailand. The relics were enshrined in Wat Mahathat Vachiramongkol in Krabi, where for four days more than 720 thousand devotees prayed to the holy relics. This needs to be seen in perspective, as Krabi province has a population of slightly less than 500 thousand, of which only 65 percent practice Buddhism. During the exhibition, a large number of devotees from neighboring countries Cambodia and Malaysia as well as other parts of Thailand visited Wat Mahat Wachiramongkol.

The main temple of the Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol complex is architecturally inspired by the Mahabodhi Temple of Bodh Gaya, symbolizing the deep religious connection between India and Thailand. It was built in honor of the 50th birthday of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, who later became HM King Rama X, the current King of Thailand. In Thailand this Dhamma Yatra also coincides with the auspicious sixth cycle and the 72nd birthday of HM King Rama X.

It is extremely rare for sacred relics to leave India for display abroad. The decision of the Government of India under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to send the remains to Thailand was a historic one, and a testament to the enduring friendship between the people of the two countries based on shared trust.
