The elections to the local bodies, scheduled for March 9, have been postponed due to several reasons, including the current economic crisis in the country. “We have asked for a meeting with the Treasury Secretary, the Inspector General of Police and the Government Printer in the Finance Ministry,” Election Commission chief Nimal Punchihewa said on Monday.
Sri Lanka’s election commission said on Monday that a new date for municipal elections in the cash-strapped country would be announced after the finance ministry guarantees funding for the democratic exercise.
The new date will be announced after getting a guarantee from the Finance Ministry on the amount required for holding the elections. It may be noted that last week the country’s Supreme Court had ordered the Treasury Secretary in the Ministry of Finance to release the 2023 budgetary allocation for holding elections to 340 local councils. Elections to appoint new administrators of local councils are pending since last year due to the current economic crisis. Significantly, the election to be held on March 9 and the postal ballot scheduled for February 22, 23 and 24 did not take place as the government printer was not able to print the ballot paper for the postal ballot.
