Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said that the lifetime disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif has ended and he is now eligible to contest elections. He further said that in the current political situation, the dissolution of the National Assembly of Pakistan before its term cannot be ruled out. He said that once the term ends, a caretaker system will be set up. Nawaz Sharif will no longer face disqualification for life as the maximum period of disqualification is five years, the minister said.
He said if anyone thinks that someone is the beneficiary of these amendments, then tomorrow it will be someone else. It is the constitutional jurisdiction of the Parliament to make and amend laws. The work of making laws cannot be done by any other institution other than the Parliament. He further said, no decision can be taken without consultation with the coalition partners in the government.
Earlier, the National Assembly of Pakistan had passed a law capping the length of time parliamentarians can be disqualified from office. Nawaz Sharif served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for three terms after being ousted in 2017 due to corruption charges. The country’s top court then banned him from politics for life. He was later sentenced to seven years in prison.
