Geneva: The head of the United Nations health agency said that cases of infection increased last month due to crowding of people during the holidays and the new form of the virus spreading around the world. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that about 10,000 people died in December due to infection, while the number of patients admitted to hospitals in about 50 countries increased by 42 percent. Most of them are from Europe and America.
The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) told reporters from his headquarters in Geneva that ‘although the number of deaths of 10,000 people in a month is low compared to the peak of the epidemic,’ he said that it is certain that the cases will increase further. It has also increased in places about which information has not been received. He has appealed to the governments to maintain surveillance and provide treatment and vaccines.
Tedros said that the JN.1 form has become the most dominant form of the virus in the world. It originates from the omicron form of the virus. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead for COVID-19, cited a rise in respiratory illnesses worldwide caused by the coronavirus as well as flu, rhinovirus and pneumonia. WHO officials have advised that people should get vaccinated, wear masks and ensure that there is good ventilation indoors.
