Nepal’s top politicians said on Saturday that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ needed to win another vote of confidence in the House of Representatives after a party in the ruling coalition withdrew support to the government. Hitraj Pandey, chief whip of the CPN-Maoist Centre, said the decision was taken by top leaders of the ruling coalition at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar. The meeting was attended by top leaders of the five-party alliance, including Prachanda, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-Unified Socialist President Madhav Kumar Nepal and Janata Samajwadi Party President Upendra Yadav.
Pandey told PTI that the Prachanda-led government has a sufficient majority in the 275-member House of Representatives despite Ravi Lamichhane-led Rashtriya Swatantra Party withdrawing support to the government. He said that this is the reason why the Prime Minister needs to get a vote of confidence again in the House of Representatives. The Rashtriya Swatantra Party on Friday withdrew support to the government after talks with Prachanda over power-sharing failed, alleging that the Prachanda government had failed to root out corruption. The RSP is the fourth largest party in the Parliament of Nepal with 22 members.
