South Korea’s military said it is fully prepared to face any provocative action by North Korea.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the second test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile designed to strike US soil and vowed to further boost the country’s nuclear warhead capabilities. Government media gave this information on Thursday. Kim’s statement made it clear that North Korea would step up weapons-testing activities to expand its arsenal in response to recent moves by the US to increase security commitments to its ally South Korea. In a sort of show of strength against North Korea on Thursday, the US flew a nuclear-capable B-52 bomber alongside its and South Korean warplanes during joint air force drills on the Korean Peninsula.
“(Kim) once again clarified that there will be no change in (North Korea’s) strategic stance and policy of continuously accelerating the development of more advanced, effective and reliable weapons systems,” the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. Kim said that since the security environment on the Korean Peninsula is being seriously threatened by hostile forces all the time, North Korea is bound to enhance the country’s nuclear deterrence. KCNA shared Kim’s statement on Wednesday, a day after North Korea confirmed the successful launch of the Hwasong-18 ICBM. The first test of the Hwasong-18 ICBM was conducted in April.
Kim has described it as the most powerful weapon of his nuclear power. According to KCNA, the purpose of the launch was to verify the technical reliability and operational reliability of the missile. Kim called the launch “another important step” in efforts to boost North Korea’s strategic forces. South Korea, the US and Japan criticized the test but North Korea. He said that this has posed a threat to regional and international peace. US National Security Council spokesman Adam Hodge said in a statement that the US will take all necessary steps to ensure its own security, that of South Korea and Japan. At the request of the US, Albania, France, Japan, Malta and the UK, the UN Security Council will hold an open meeting on Friday afternoon to discuss the launch of the ICBM.
Wednesday’s launch is in violation of Security Council resolutions that ban North Korea from launching ballistic technology launches. But it is unclear whether the Security Council could impose new sanctions on North Korea after veto-wielding permanent members China and Russia thwarted earlier US and other efforts at the time of North Korea’s other recent ballistic missile tests. South Korea’s military said it is fully prepared to face any provocative action by North Korea.
