More than 200 supporters of Imran Khan have been arrested in Pakistan’s Punjab province, including those who opposed his arrest. The police gave this information on Tuesday . Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Khan (70) was found guilty of “corruption” in the Toshakhana case by an Islamabad court and sentenced to three years in jail. Soon after that, on Saturday, he was arrested from his Zaman Park residence here. He is currently in Attock Jail in Punjab province.
Police crackdown on Imran supporters
According to the Punjab Police, since Khan’s arrest, more than 200 PTI office-bearers and workers have been arrested in different parts of the province. However, PTI has alleged that not only did the police arrest its workers protesting against Khan’s arrest, it also raided the houses of party functionaries to detain them. Police said more than a dozen of Khan’s supporters have been booked on terrorism charges.
Imran appealed in the High Court
According to the FIR, people accompanying Khan, including his media team, had threatened the police team that went to arrest him on Saturday. “They assaulted and snatched government guns from policemen and threatened to kill them by pointing guns at them,” the FIR states. The police later arrested him. Meanwhile, PTI’s lawyers’ wing Insaf Lawyers Forum protested outside the Lahore High Court on Monday and Tuesday, raising slogans against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-led coalition government and the army over the conviction of their leader in a “fake case”. .
Khan on Tuesday challenged his conviction in the Toshakhana case, saying the “biased” judge’s decision was a “slap in the face of due process and fair trial”. He has appealed through three lawyers against his conviction and sentence of three years imprisonment in the Islamabad High Court.
