Nawaz Sharif and his daughter’s victory challenged on technical grounds
The victory of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and his daughter in the National Assembly elections was challenged in the Lahore High Court on Saturday, alleging that the Election Commission did not follow the correct procedure. Challenging the victory of Nawaz and his daughter Maryam Nawaz from Lahore seats, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidate Dr Yasmin Rashid, who faced defeat, claimed that the Election Commission had issued fake Form 47 instead of Form 45. According to him he was declared the winner.
Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz wins by garnering more than 83,000 votes
Form 45 is commonly called the ‘Result of Calculation’ form. It is an important record in the Pakistani electoral process, which aims to maintain transparency and accountability by documenting and disclosing the results of the voting process at a particular polling station. The ECP had canceled the ‘bat’ election symbol of PTI led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, after which a large number of PTI candidates contested the elections as independent candidates. Sharif (74) has won against PTI candidate Dr Yasmin Rashid from NA-130. Sharif got more than 1,72,000 votes, while Rashid got more than 113,000 votes. Sharif’s 50-year-old daughter Maryam Nawaz won the NA-119 seat by getting over 83,000 votes against PTI’s Farooq Shahzad. Shahzad got more than 68,000 votes.
Malala Yousafzai said- Pakistan needs free and fair elections
Yasmin, one of those who filed the petition in the Lahore High Court, said that she had won against Sharif as per Form-45, however, the ECP issued Form-47 and declared the PML-N chief the winner. Similarly, Shahzad said that Maryam had lost the seat as per the polling booth results (Form-45), but she was declared the winner through fake Form-47. Meanwhile, Pakistani Malala Yousafzai, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, said that her country needs free and fair elections. He wrote on ‘X’, Pakistan needs free and fair elections, which includes transparency in vote counting and respect for the results. I still believe, as I always have, that we must accept the voters’ decision with grace. I hope that our elected officials, whether in government or opposition parties, will prioritize democracy and prosperity for the people of Pakistan.
